Download Ingress to see where all the pokéstops, gyms and pokémon will spawn: http://appadvice.com/app/gogo-maps-pokemon-go-guide-with-maps-for-gyms-pokestops-and-livespotting/1133320007
-Orange ring is your interaction ring, if you're only using Ingress for PGO, ignore it
Expanding blue ring is 'radar', its just a pretty graphics thing. Ignore it.
Zoom all the way out and look for the white energy dots. That's XM. The denser XM is, the higher possibility of Pokemon spawns. Go to the dense areas to look for Pokemon.
Also, those grey/green/blue big lights? ignore them. They're 'portals'. XM spawns around them, that does not mean Pokemon will. Portals became stops and gyms in PGO.
Also you might see your area covered with green or blue swirly stuff, or beams of light running across the map. It may look a bit busy, try to ignore those too. Those are 'mind fields' and 'links'
Just concentrate on the white particle fairy lights. *taken from a reddit post*
